Prologue
Lantom is a small cluster of islands in the Opitic Sea. This island cluster contains two main islands and three smaller islands. The largest island is called Awtana. It holds the cluster’s main food supplies and is controlled be the wealthy islanders. The second largest island is Lunit. Lunit holds most of the population of Lantom. The three smaller islands are not named or civilized except for a couple holiday mansions for the wealthy islanders.
Most of Lantom’s population is in poverty because of the harsh rule of the wealthy islanders.
On Lunit there was one family who, unlike the other families, was despised so much that they were actually banished from the two main islands. We do not know why they were banished or even where they went, but we do know that they left their youngest child behind.
This story is of that child, a young timid boy with no family or place to call home. His name was Maxe. He had brown tanglely hair and the innocent face of a four-year-old. This is what Maxe was when Nesa found him wondering in the forest with a little bear cub. Nesa was the oldest woman of Lantom as well as the poorest. She was very kind and took pity on him, not knowing who he was. Nesa brought Maxe back to her small hovel. Maxe lived with Nesa and cared for her. They were a family.
Five years later, Nesa grew very ill and died. Maxe was once again alone with no family.
Chapter 1
“Come back here you thief!”
Maxe ran through the street with the baker on his heels. He made a quick turn into an alley and knocked a barrel of apples over. The apples slowed the baker down but he got help from three other men and they began closing in on him. Maxe quickly ducked behind a stack of crates and watched the men race by him. When the men turn the corner maxe left his hiding place and went back up the alley and back into the street. He tried to blend into the crowd and reach the town gate unnoticed but the four men left the alley and they had seen him. Maxe sprinted toward the gate. The men wore gaining fast. Maxe was almost at the gate when a strong hand jerked him around.
They caught me? How did catch up to me so fast? Maxe was terrified. It would basically be the end of his life if he got caught. Maxe struggled to free himself but the man that had grabbed him turned him away from the street. The man wore a richly colored silk robe with gold stitching and fringes. His light hair was beginning to turn black like most Lantomites did in their older ages. His face which looked as though it was usually kind and companionate was grim and held a frown.
“Young man,” his voice was deep and stern but it had a hint of patience, “you should know better than to run down the street like a wild pig. I have it in mind to tell your parents, but I will let you go if you promise to never run through the streets again.”
Maxe saw the men getting closer and stuttered his promise, “Y-yes sir, I p-p-promise.”
“Good. I will let you go, but if I find you running through the streets again I will find and tell your parent and the authorities.”
The man released Maxe just in enough time for Maxe to get through the gate and hid behind a bush before the four men came through the gate.
